Turning is a method of cutting a workpiece on a lathe by rotating the workpiece against a cutting tool. Most workpieces with rotating surfaces can be processed by CNC turning, such as inner and outer cylindrical surfaces, inner and outer conical surfaces, end faces, grooves, threads, and rotating formed surfaces. Ordinary lathes can be divided into horizontal lathes, floor lathes, vertical lathes, turret lathes, and imitation lathes, mostly horizontal lathes.
Due to the development of modern science and technology, more and more high-strength and high-hardness engineering materials are used. Traditional turning techniques are difficult or impossible to process some high-strength and high-hardness materials; modern hard turning technology makes it possible and has achieved significant benefits in production.
Characteristics of CNC lathe machining:
1. High conversion efficiency
Turning is more efficient than grinding. Turning usually uses a large cutting depth and high workpiece speed; its metal removal rate is usually several times that of grinding. Turning can complete various surface machining processes; grinding requires multiple clamping, has a short auxiliary time, and has high precision in the position of the processed surface.
2. Low equipment investment cost
With the same productivity, lathe investment is superior to grinding machines, and the auxiliary system cost is also lower. For small-batch production, turning does not require special equipment; for large-batch, high-precision parts processing, it is necessary to fully utilize the good rigidity, positioning accuracy, and repeatability of high-precision CNC machine tools.
3. Suitable for small-batch flexible production requirements. The lathe itself is a flexible processing method with advantages such as a wide processing range, convenient lathe control, and fast cutting and clamping, which can better meet the flexible production requirements of grinding hard turning.
4. Hard turning allows parts to obtain good overall machining accuracy. Most of the heat generated by hard turning is taken away by the cutting oil and will not cause surface burns and cracks like grinding. The surface quality is good, the roundness is accurate, and the positional accuracy between the machined surfaces is high.
